Northwestern Crew is accepting applications for two Novice Coach positions for the 2017-2018 academic year. These are not a full time position and candidates will need to be current Chicago area residents or willing to relocate. We are a nationally competitive collegiate co-ed club rowing team and a member of the American Collegiate Rowing Association. We achieve competitive results at Head of the Hooch, MACRA, Dad Vail and ACRA along with smaller regattas throughout the year. Our team is run by a responsible student-led executive board that coordinates fundraising, finances, administration and travel, and has 4 coaches on average who oversee the team's training and racing.


  • Teaching Novice rowers the basic stroke and concepts
  • Running practices either on land, on the erg, or on the water
  • Coordinate with other members of the coaching staff
  • Assist in rigging and equipment maintenance
  • Driving truck and trailer to regattas
  • Aid in annual recruitment drives


Time Commitment

  • Weekly practices, 6 – 8 a.m.
  • Weekend regattas
  • Spring training, March 24-31
  • We practice mid-September until May, with more flexibility with scheduling in the winter


  • Investment in recruiting college club rowers
  • Passion for growing the team as a whole
  • Focus on both rower and coxswain development
  • Ability to work cohesively in a group environment
  • Ability to communicate rowing technique
  • Strong understanding of rowing equipment and rigging
  • Familiarity with collegiate club rowing 
  • Understanding of the dynamics of a club team run by students
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Chicago resident or willing to relocate
  • Proven record of success in competitive collegiate rowing or coxing experience
  • Coaching experience strongly preferred
